Overwatch 2 Team Queue Competitive mode explained

The new Overwatch 2 Competitive Team Queue mode looks to provide stacks of five a way to play without the hindrance of rank restrictions, here’s how it works.

Overwatch 2 Season 5 has brought the exciting return of the Summer Games Event in 2023. The new event not only brings various summer-themed cosmetics for the game’s Heroes, but also a variety of balance changes, adjustments, bug fixes, and also a Competitive update detailed in the patch notes.

Overwatch 2’s Competitive mode is extremely popular, as players get to test their skills against similarly ranked players. However, it can be pretty frustrating when you are unable to play with friends due to rank restrictions.

The devs have clearly noticed this, as they have introduced a new Team Queue mode for Competitive in Overwatch 2, which allows friends to team up and play competitively, without restrictions.

Team Queue is essentially a new competitive playlist for Overwatch 2 which requires a full stack of five to play. The mode features no skill restrictions, so those five players can play Competitive games of Overwatch 2 together no matter what each of their ranks are.

According to the blog, the mode features the “standard role lock ruleset,” where players select a role and a team can have one tank, two DPS, and two Support. However, instead of selecting a role before matchmaking, in Team Queue, players will select their role at the character screen, giving teams more composition flexibility.

The only restriction in this mode is that you must have five players to enter the matchmaking for the mode. This is great for those who have friends that are at lower or higher ranks, as it essentially means you can bypass the restrictions and play together so long as you have a band of five players.

Keep in mind that you can’t play Overwatch 2 Competitive between PC and console, meaning you can’t squad up with a mix of PC and console players, so you’ll have to find a team of five on the same platforms as you.
